Networks Financial Institute to Speak About Credit Unions’ Roles In Promoting Financial Literacy

(March 7, 2006 – Indianapolis, IN) David Godsted, director of outreach at Networks Financial Institute at Indiana State University will discuss the role credit unions play in creating a more financially literate membership, on Wednesday, April 12, during the inaugural Financial Literacy Seminar presented by the Indiana Credit Union League.

As non-profit organizations, credit unions play an important role in delivering financial products and services to the underserved.  Godsted will provide Indiana credit union leadership with insight into programs and services they can use to help their members enhance their personal financial management skills.  “One thing we’ve learned is that it is never too early nor too late in life to begin changing peoples’ attitudes and behaviors about personal finance,” Godsted commented.

An expert in grassroots literacy initiatives, Godsted previously served as the executive director of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy.  He has also worked in Yemen as director of the Yemen-America Language Institute, and in Saudi Arabia as a lecturer at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.
The Financial Literacy Seminar will include presentations by the Purdue Cooperative Extension, and the Indiana Council for Economic Education as well as a review of financial literacy best practices.

“Credit unions have a history of serving their membership not just with products and services, but with information that can help them establish stronger personal finance skills.  We look forward to hosting this seminar as one of many consumer advocacy initiatives credit unions will undertake during National Financial Literacy Month,” said Joe Guilfoy, vice president of consulting and education at the Indiana Credit Union League.

Registration information is available at 317-594-5300 or 800-285-5300.
